Protective mask 90

Protective mask 90 is a Swedish-made protective mask that, despite its age, is still relatively modern. It provides good protection against most nerve gases, viruses, bacteria and radioactive material and has many good features. The mask allows a field of vision of 87% and it is permitted to drive vehicles with the protective mask on.

The face shield is equipped with a special speech membrane that makes it possible to communicate significantly better via radio and telephone than older masks such as the Protective Mask m/51.

The protective mask seals well even if you have a little stubble and is relatively easy to breathe in. Protective mask 90 has a tube through which you can drink liquids and take liquid food with the mask on. The system should be able to handle over 200 ml/minute of fluid intake. This increases the soldier's endurance significantly as the enormous fluid loss in the tight clothing is extremely strenuous.

Not permitted as civilian work safety equipment

The mask lacks CE marking as it was developed for military use before Sweden's membership in the EU in 1995, something that is not required for the Armed Forces. During the closure of the invasion defense in the 2000s, a large number of masks became redundant for the Armed Forces and were instead handed over and put into use by the police, rescue services, healthcare and other civilian authorities. These activities are subject to civilian regulations where CE marking is a requirement for protective equipment ( AFS 2001:3 ). During the 2010s, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) has requested exemption from the Swedish Work Environment Authority for continued use several times. During the crisis with the Coronavirus COVID-19 in 2020, this issue became urgent again and, after initially denying exemptions, a decision will be made in March 2020 on exemptions from the rules by the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
